IELTS Academic: If you are a student and want to pursue higher education abroad then you opt for IELTS Academic test.
IELTS General: If you are working professional, or have been offered a job or are looking forward to settling abroad, you opt for the IELTS General test.

Listening
This section assesses your ability to understand spoken English by using a variety of recordings of conversations, monologues, and discussions. IELTS listening is the same for academic and general test.
Reading
This section provides passages ranging from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytic which helps the examiner evaluate your comprehensive skills. There is a slight difference between the number of passages and the types of passages provided to academic and general candidates.
Writing
This section allows you to demonstrate your ability to present your ideas clearly in written English. .
Speaking
This section assesses your spoken English through various questions and discussions on familiar and unfamiliar topics. It’s a one-to-one face to face interview and is the same for both academic and general candidates.
The total time for the test is 2 hours 45 minutes.
- 1. Listening- 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes
- 2. Speaking- interview, 15 minutes
- 3. Reading- different for Academic and General Training – 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes
- 4. Writing- different for Academic and General Training- 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes.
